Community Choice – Reinvest in the Heartland
Coal mining in the Illinois coal basin is the key to our economic future well-being. Or … so we’ve been told.
Join Eco-Justice Collaborative and Shawnee Hills and Hollers in Saline County on Wednesday, December 17,2014, for a short presentation that illustrates how an economy based primarily on coal also has significant social costs and long-term liabilities. Learn how communities where mining takes place bear the costs for damages to prime farmland, local infrastructure, public health, land, water, and air.
Following the presentation we will explore together alternatives that can lay the groundwork for vibrant and diversified economies in places historically tied to the “boom and bust” cycle of coal:
- Take home a fact sheet that you can share with your friends, family and colleagues.
- Bring your ideas for diversifying the economy in your town.
- Learn what other coal-mining communities are doing to build on their history and resources to create jobs and prosperity.
