Building Power in Groups
As EJC begins to collaborative with others on what we hope to be a state-wide campaign that fosters re-investment in the heartland of Illinois, we remember how easy it is to fall into the trap of hierarchal organizing and campaign management.  So – we decided to take a few moments to watch Starhawk’s 2012 presentation at the Great Lakes Bioneers Chicago event.

In this presentation, Starhawk helps us explore issues of personal and social power, and then teaches us how to focus group energy to nurture resilient communities that enable us to become a joyful, effective agents of change.  We’ve watched it again – and hope you will take some time to watch it, too.

Starhawk is an author, activist, permaculture designer, and a voice for earth-based spirituality. Her newest book is “The Empowerment Manual: A Guide for Collaborative Groups”.  This book is a comprehensive guide for groups seeking to organize with shared power and bottom-up leadership to foster vision, trust, accountability and responsibility.

She is a veteran of progressive movements, from anti-war to anti-nukes, and deeply committed to bringing the techniques and creative power of spirituality to political activism. She was a panelist for the Newsweek/Washington Post website on religion, “On Faith,” and also contributes to Beliefnet and ZNet, as well as maintaining her own blog, “Dirt Worship” www.starhawksblog.org. Her Facebook page is here.

Starhawk is a founder of Earth Activist Trainings (EAT): intensive seminars that combine permaculture design, political organizing, and earth-based spirituality; and a cofounder of Reclaiming, an activist branch of modern Pagan religion. Her archives are maintained at the Graduate Theological Union library in Berkeley, California.
