Protect Our Water

Judy and GlennSpeak Out For Stronger Stream Protection Rules

Judy and Glenn Kellen have lived in Saline County, IL for nearly 40 years and their dream of a peaceful retirement in the serene rolling hills of southern Illinois was shattered when a Peabody mine began blasting away the hills and destroying the upland streams just 1000 feet from their home.

The Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement has proposed a new rule to protect our water and hold polluters accountable for mining pollution — and the polluters couldn’t be angrier.

This newly proposed Stream Protection Rule creates more accountability for mining companies, forcing them to better monitor and restore streams and other water sources that their mining pollutes. But groups working for strong rules say it doesn’t go far enough:

  • The rules would require coal companies to test and monitor the condition of streams before, during and after their operations.  But, Appalachian Voices has found multiple instances across multiple states, where companies have used self-monitoring to their benefit, turning in false data in order to avoid penalties and internal costs.
