We are inundated with news about our faltering economy, declining resources, climate change, and environmental degradation associated with our ever-increasing consumer society. But little is said in the media about positive responses to these challenges.  What would it take to build communities that are capable of bouncing back from adverse situations? How might they actively prepare for economic, social and environmental change?

This fun, 5-minute animated video Visualizing a Plenitude Economy is based on economist and best-selling author Juliet Schor’s  book, True Wealth. It provides a vision of what a post-consumer society could look like, with people working fewer hours and pursuing re-skilling, homesteading, and small-scale enterprises that can help reduce the overall size and impact of today’s consumer economy.

Responding to our current moment, True Wealth puts sustainability at its core, redefining the American Dream. But Schor does not promote a paradigm of sacrifice. Instead, she presents a compelling argument that through a major shift to new sources of wealth, green technologies, and different ways of living, individuals and the country as a whole can actually be better off, and more economically secure.
