Growing New Energy Jobs Downstate – Ready for Round #2!

REGISTER HERE for July Southern Illinois forums

The first round of LOOKING TO THE FUTURE – Growing New Energy Jobs Downstate was a success. The purpose of these forums is to work with local officials, planners, and opinion leaders in communities whose economies have relied on coal (mining and power plant), and offer paths for a just transition to a new economy that is based on clean energy and energy efficiency. When implemented, the resources and incentives provided by the newly adopted Future Energy Jobs Act (FEJA) will slash carbon in Illinois by 50% while growing the state’s economy; creating new jobs in renewable energy; and providing access to solar energy and job training in Illinois’ economically disadvantaged communities.

Attendees in southern Illinois (John A. Logan and Southeastern Illinois Colleges) and central Illinois (Lincoln Land Community College and Illinois Central College) heard from:

David McEllis, Environmental Law and Policy Center.
Shannon Fulton, StraightUp Solar.
Anne McKibben and Tina Williamson, Elevate Energy
Stacey Paradis, Midwestern Energy Efficiency Alliance.
Ingrid Schwingler, GRID Alternatives.
Tim Gibson, Illinois Green Economy Network.
Cindy Winland, Delta Institute
Aur Beck, Advanced Energy Solutions Group, Inc.

Presenters emphasized the fact that renewable energy and energy efficiency programs will need to grow rapidly in order to take meet 2020 and 2030 targets.

That means enough projects need to be designed and implemented by 2030 to provide power for an equivalent of 1 million homes, and a workforce trained to build and otherwise bring them about (sales and marketing, engineers and designers, electrical workers, and more)

Handouts and powerpoint presentations from Round #1 can be accessed here.

Attendees Provide Essential Input
Round tables in the afternoon with panelists, workshop planners, and attendees enabled planners to identify needs, opportunities and resources required for local project implementation. This feedback is being used to plan the second round of meetings to help participants envision projects or prepare pathways for community solar, the Solar for All programs, or energy efficiency.

Save the Date for Round #2!
We want to invite you to save the date for Round #2, a follow-up forum that is intended to present more detailed information on job-creating projects. These July half-day forums will again feature experts in community solar and the Solar for All program; present case studies; explore paths toward initiating renewable energy projects; and discuss opportunities for entering the solar field. A working agenda for each location is presented below.

July Forums – Locations and Agendas
These next gatherings are being offered free of charge. We’ll provide a brief overview of the benefits of the Future Energy Jobs Act to frame each of these workshops and help those who missed Round #1 understand some the benefits the Act will bring to Illinois.
