In Illinois, mining activities can take place 300 feet from a home.  The noise associated with blasting, trucks, and mining equipment; lights that allow mining to take place during the night; and dust from blasting, trucks, and draglines caused many to either sell their dwellings  to Peabody – or abandon their homes.
