Why CO2 pipelines are dangerous
All pipelines leak or rupture. But a leaking or ruptured CO2 pipeline releases a toxic asphyxiant that can harm or even kill people and animals, including livestock. CO2 is a colorless and odorless gas that hugs the ground and displaces oxygen.
Three CO2 pipelines have been proposed in Illinois thus far. All three have filed for their certificate of authority before the Illinois Commerce Commission. (ICC). After meeting landowner resistance in Illinois that was taken into account by the ICC staff who recommended denial, two of the three canceled their projects. The third, One Earth Sequestration, LLC, will be returning after July 1, 2026, when the state's moratorium on CO2 pipelines is over.
Be sure to follow this website for what's next. The CCS regulatory bill signed into law in July 0f 2024 requires companies to hold public meetings along their route. I this case, that means One Earth will present their project to th public and local governments in Ford and McLean counties,
Will they be able to safely route their CO2 pipeline from Gibson City to their injection wells in McLean County? The public, local governments, and emergency responders all will have the opportunity to comment BEFORE the One Earth officially submits its application to the ICC. And the draft rule in process before the ICC will, if it is adopted, require companies to make their modeling public. This is all new and, to our knowledge, not required anywhere else in the country.
